Santa Cruz Bicycle Film Festival at the Guerrilla Ride-In
Oct 13, 2005
In conjunction with the Santa Cruz Guerrilla Drive-In, on Friday, the evening of October 21st, People Power will show a series of films on Critical Mass and cycling culture. We will meet at Fair Ave. and the railroad tracks on the Westside of Santa Cruz. Movies start at 8:00 PM.
The Guerrilla Drive-In is an outdoor movie theater that springs up along train tracks and under bridges. It's a movement that reclaims public space and transforms industrial wasteland into places where people can gather and have fun.
The main film, "Still We Ride", is a newly-released documentary that chronicles the formation of the bicycle event, Critical Mass, in San Francisco over 10 years ago. The film concludes with the mass arrests of cyclists at the Critical Mass ride that took place in New York in August 2004, when cyclists participated in protests at the Republican National Convention. The film is currently on an international tour to bring awareness to the abuse of cyclists' rights in New York. Other films will be screened as well, including animated shorts, documentaries on the bike messenger culture, and short films about the simple joy of riding a bike.
Half of the donations gathered at the screening will go towards People Power, and half towards New York Critical Mass to support them in their legal battles. The event will be a joyous gathering of people to celebrate grassroots organization and the urban cycling culture. Bring popcorn, candy, wine, chairs, blankets, and friends to enjoy the movie.
After the movies, the Santa Cruz Midnight Mystery Ride will take you and your friends on a rollicking after-hours tour of the bike ways and back streets of our fair city. Leaving after the Guerrilla Ride-In, we'll head downtown to pick up more folks at the Poet and Patriot Bar. Where are we going? It's a mystery! Only the leader for that week knows. The ride is 3-5 miles long and always ends with an after-hours party in nature, so bring a snack to share and pack your trash.
