Bicycle Traffic School Approved
People Power has teamed up with the Santa Cruz County Traffic Safety Coalition and Traffic Commissioner Kim Basquet in an effort to start a program that will allow bicyclists to attend Bike Traffic School instead of paying fines for bike tickets.
Under the program, cyclists receiving tickets—usually involving fines of over $100—would have the option of paying $35 and attending a half-day traffic safety school taught by cyclists in the advocacy community. The class will include classroom and on-the-street instruction in safe and legal bicycling.
Commissioner Basquet supports the program and sought approval within the County court system. Her support is crucial, as she hears most of the traffic cases.
This program was approved and will become effective in August 2006.
